Top Tips for Year 4
Welcome to Year 4, we have an exciting half term ahead and a full curriculum of activities planned. Our main curriculum focus this half term will be ‘Volcanoes and Earthquakes. The children will have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of how Earthquakes and Volcanoes are formed and the impact this has on the animals and humans living in those environments. impact that ancient civilisations have had on modern day life. During this learning, we will be reading ‘When The Giant Stirred’ by Celia Godkin. Throughout our English lessons, we will be consolidating our learning from the previous year. The pupils will be developing their use of descriptive language, punctuation, choosing vocabulary for clarity and cohesion, paragraphs and punctuating direct speech.
Using the text ‘Ariki And The Island Of Wonders‘, reading sessions will develop the skills of inference, retrieving information and using evidence from a text to justify responses and understanding.
In Science, we will be focusing on Animals and Living things. We will be using our classification skills to help group living things in local and wider environments. We will investigate changes in the environment and the impact that this has on living things.
In computing, we will begin programming, using technology to consider repetition in shapes, developing our problem solving skills and computational thinking. In Maths, we will be focusing on methods for multiplication and division. We will also develop our speed and fluency of our times table recall, in preparation for the Multiplication Table Check (MTC) in June. In RE, we will be thinking carefully about our big question ‘Why do Christians call the day Jesus died ‘Good Friday’?
This half term the children will have PE on a Monday and a Wednesday morning. They should come into school with their PE kit on and school jumper. The children will be developing their team work skills and working in teams for Dodge ball and Dance activities.
Reading Books: Reading books and reading records should be brought in every day. Children will read daily and any reading at home should be noted in their reading records. As always, the children are responsible for changing their own books and ensuring that quizzes are completed in class. They will be given plenty of opportunities to change their reading books.
Home learning:
Home learning will be set each Friday for children on Seesaw. In addition, we would like the children to be reading regularly (preferably each day) and practicing their timetables on Times Table Rockstars. Maths Flex is also available for the children to use to embed their learning from maths lessons.
