Year 6
Welcome to Year 6!
Welcome to the Spring Term 2023. In our English and Reading lessons, we will be studying the text ‘The Selfish Giant’ and ‘The Happy Prince’- classic stories by Oscar Wilde. In Maths we will be mastering ‘Fractions’ with a focus on comparing and ordering and adding and subtracting fractions. In our Geography lessons we are studying South America, exploring human and physical features including biomes. In Science we are studying ‘Living Things in their Environments’ – exploring plant and animal classification and an important botanist – Carl Linnaeus. We will also be creating 3D models in our computing lesson! Wow, what a term!
Classes
We have two classes in Year 6, Chestnut and Oak. You can meet your teachers for year 6 to the right.
To keep up to date with what’s been happening in school, you can visit our Twitter account tags #OakUHPS #ChestnutUHPS #Year6UHPS
For home learning and remote learning provision we use Seesaw. Each child will be given their own login details for this. You can also link to this as a parent or carer to view and comment on work. Seesaw provides teachers with the opportunity to feedback to the child about their work either through a typed or voice comment. Children can then edit their work just like they would do in the classroom!
Top tips for Year 6
Reading: Please continue to encourage your child to read at home and take the opportunity to discuss their reading with them. The school library is available to them along with the extensive range of texts inside the year 6 class rooms.
Home learning: Home learning is due each Tuesday and is a weekly task linked to/supporting learning taking place in the classroom. Home learning will be set on Seesaw each Friday – all children have received their new class log in details.
Times Tables Rock Stars – Children should practise their times tables daily on Times Tables Rock Stars. Ten minutes per day will help them become confident recalling their times tables. Children are awarded certificates each Friday during our whole school assembly if they achieve their Rock Star, Rock Legend or Rock Hero status. All children have received their log in details.
Maths Flex – Children should complete two or three nuggets each week to consolidate learning that takes place in our maths lessons. Maths Flex links very closely with our Power Maths lessons and helps children deepen there understanding of the concepts taught in class.
Spellings: Following Pathways to Spell, children will practice focused spellings within class. At home it is recommended that children practice the Year 5/6 spellings too (please see ‘useful information’).
PE: Please send your child into school on their PE day in their PE kit – they will not get changed in school. In cold weather, tracksuit bottoms and a jumper/hoodie are a good idea whereas the dark shorts and a plain white t-shirt will be sufficient in the summer and for indoor activities.
- Oak’s PE day is Tuesday with Miss Williams and Friday with A4A (Activity 4 All)
- Chestnut’s PE day is Tuesday with Miss Barker and Friday with A4A (Activity 4 All)
Essential items: Children should remember to bring in their reading book, pencil case and a healthy snack/water bottle. School uniform guidelines should also be followed. Please ensure that all items are clearly labelled.
Thank you.
