Welcome to Year 5

A huge welcome to the Spring Term in  Year 5! We are looking forward to all the exciting learning that is going to take place this term. We start the term with our new topic 'Africa' followed by 'Space' after February half term.

Year 5 have already begun to learn a musical instrument as part of our 'Wider Opportunities' music lessons. These include the flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, baritone and glockenspiel. We look forward to performing with the Halle Orchestra in Manchester in the summer term.

General information

Changing reading books:  The children should be changing their own books whenever they finish one, on any day necessary. Most children have chosen to use the Seesaw app to record the books that they are reading.  The children do need their reading books in their bags every day to allow them to read with an adult whenever possible. Regular opportunities for reading help develop confidence, fluency and have a huge impact upon language and writing skills. Chidren should be encouraged to read aloud where possible.

Information about accessing your child's learning journal through Seesaw have already been sent home.

Home Learning:  Home Learning is usually due each Wednesday.  Please see the grid that your child will bring home or attached in the files. There are always additional tasks for the children to complete. Children should practise their times tables daily on Times Tables Rock Stars. Children should be practising their Year 5/6 spelling which can be found in the back of their home learning books.

Please remember that your child will need a bottle of water to have in class.

PE: Please make sure your PE kit is in school every week. It is important that children have appropriate PE kits, including long sleeved top and jogging bottoms (for when it is cold) or t-shirt and shorts (for when it is warmer). It may also be a good idea to add a jumper or hooded top in their bag as the weather gets colder. P.E. is usually on Wednesday morning. Everyone is included in 'The Daily Mile' during the day in school. This is part of the curriculum so it is important that your child is able to take part in sensible footware. Thank you.

Forest Schools

Year 5 enjoyed their Forest Schools sessions at the start of this term.  Look on our Twitter feed for photos of what we got up to and see our reflections on Seesaw.

Please make sure your child comes into school dressed appropriately on the relevant day- non uniform - with warm clothing ( layers are important and easy to take off if it is warm). A change of footwear is essential with wellington boots or strong walking boots advised.

General information: Please ensure all your children's belongings are clearly labelled ( especially jumpers and cardigans!). If your child wishes to bring in their own snack, please ensure it is healthy. Children are allowed to bring in water bottles and have regular access to them during the day. Please take the time to look at the lunch choices for the week so that your child is able to decide on what they wish to have. Don't forget to credit your Parentpay account to ensure that there is enough credit.

Thank you from the Year 5 team,

Ms Dolz, Miss Barker and Mrs Howie .
