Welcome to Year One

A very warm welcome back to school for all of our Year 1 children and parents. We hope you enjoyed the half term break and are excited for the rest of the year ahead!

So far we have already enjoyed reading and exploring Lost and and Found, Nibbles the Book Monster and The Lion Inside, which has helped us to have lots of creative learning experiences within our classroom.

We have already started our fun-filled Spring Term and been exploring Place Value (up to 50), Subtraction and Shape in Maths. We have been basing our learning in English and our Topics on various books about lions with the children choosing which parts they wanted to focus on...we enjoyed learning lots about other animals that live in the African savannah too.

Take a look at our Twitter account @UptonHeathCE and use #Year1UHPS to see what we have been up to.

Our days for PE this term are Monday and Friday (Indoor Games).

Therefore it is good to have both an indoor and outdoor kit in school all week: pumps / trainers, t-shirt / jumper, shorts / jogging bottoms.

Forest School for both Ash and Yew will be in the Summer 2 half-term.

However we aim to use the outdoor environment as much as we can, so it is a good idea to have wellies in school all year just in case.

The current Home Learning grid has been added below and on the VLE.

Some top tips for being in Year 1:

Please listen to your child read their book regularly as this will support their confidence, fluency and has a huge impact upon their language and writing skills. Sharing and enjoying books together and reading to your child are equally important. We will be changing reading books on a Monday and Friday. Please ensure that you have signed your child's reading record so their book can be changed.

We will also send out Home Learning books with fun activities to complete. These activities do not need to be completed all at once but your child can choose which order they wish to complete them in. Please send Home Learning books in on a Friday for us to have a look at.

It is a good idea to send your child to school with their full PE kit at the start of a half-term and that it remains in school until a school holiday. This is to make sure they have it for every PE lesson. It is important that the children have appropriate PE kits including long sleeved top and jogging bottoms (for when it is cold) or t-shirt and shorts (when it is warmer). It may also be a good idea to add a jumper or hooded top in their bag as the weather is colder.

Everyone is also included in 'The Daily Mile' during the day in school. This is part of our curriculum so it is important that your child is able to take part in sensible footwear.

General Information:

  • Please ensure all your children's belongings are clearly labelled (especially jumpers and cardigans!)

  • If your child wishes to bring in their own snack, please ensure it is healthy (e.g. raisins and other fruit)

  • Children are allowed to bring in waterbottles and they have access to these during the day.

Thank you from the Year 1 team: Mrs Brocken, Mr Johnson, Mrs Bowles, Miss Marrs and Mrs Pearson.
