Welcome to Year One

A very warm welcome back to all of our Year 1 children and parents.

So far we have enjoyed a fantastic Autumn and even better Spring Term and were able to achieve so much together: more adventures with Paddington, learning about Chester and Peru; building confidence and ability with numbers, adding and subtracting (using those Part-Part-Whole models and Ten frames) and we even made our own Maths games. We also started our Toys topic, reading 'Toys in Space' (by Mini Grey) and even managed to fit in Guest Storytellers each Thursday.

Take a look at our Twitter account @UptonHeathCE and use #Year1UHPS to see what we have been up to.

How can it get any better than that?

We are really looking forward to an even better Summer Term though.

Thursdays will continue to be our day for PE this term and it will be a mix of indoors and outdoors (depending on the weather).

Therefore it is good to have both an indoor and outdoor kit: pumps / trainers, t-shirt / jumper, shorts / jogging bottoms)

Forest School for Ash and Yew will be in the Summer 2 half-term.

We also aim to use the outdoor environment as much as we can, so it is a good idea to have wellies in school just in case.

The current Home Learning grid has been added below and on the VLE.

Some top tips for being in Year 1:

Please listen to your child read their book regularly as this will support their confidence, fluency and has a huge impact upon their language and writing skills. Sharing and enjoying books together and reading to your child are equally important. We will be changing reading books on a Monday and Friday. Please ensure that you have signed your child's reading record so their book can be changed.

We will also send out Home Learning books with fun activities to complete. These activities do not need to be completed all at once but your child can choose which order they wish to complete them in. Please send Home Learning books in on a Friday for us to have a look at.

It is a good idea to send your child to school with their full PE kit at the start of a half-term and that it remains in school until a school holiday. This is to make sure they have it for every PE lesson. It is important that the children have appropriate PE kits including long sleeved top and jogging bottoms (for when it is cold) or t-shirt and shorts (when it is warmer). It may also be a good idea to add a jumper or hooded top in their bag as the weather is colder.

Everyone is also included in 'The Daily Mile' during the day in school. This is part of our curriculum so it is important that your child is able to take part in sensible footwear.

General Information:

  • Please ensure all your children's belongings are clearly labelled (especially jumpers and cardigans!)

  • If your child wishes to bring in their own snack, please ensure it is healthy (e.g. raisins)

  • Children are allowed to bring in waterbottles and they have access to these during the day.

  • Your child may bring in a small toy for Golden Time on Friday afternoons (it must be able to fit in their tray!)
